Sara- Thanks for sharing this. This is definitely a great point: "Art defies mastery. Unless you are part of an academic hierarchy, there are no tests, no certifications, no letters after your name or badges or sashes or hats or little pins that say you are now an expert at this writing thing." I appreciate that your observation is that it has gone beyond standard measurements of mastery. It's definitely the case for most artistic pursuits. :)
Iāve been listening to a podcast that goes into ALL THE THINGS about trad publishing, especially midlist. Itās definitely NOT you and your work. Unless you get one of those big 5 deals with a big advance, the wheels of promotion do not churn in the same way a āflavor of the monthā will. In other words, if they sink a bunch into an advance, they do whatever they can to make sure the book gets the best shot. Big takeaway: your sales numbers arenāt a clear reflection of your talent or your book. Itās totally distorted by vagaries of marketing & promotion. I loved your second book so, so much! (DM me if you want the name of the podcast. Itās blowing my mind.)

Thanks you so much. I know that in theory but it needs to be explained to my amygdala!
