Let me say that again.

Creative. Work. Is. Real. Work.

This newsletter will offer a mix of opinion, encouragement, commiseration, community, and tools to make the fragmented archipelago of the creative process a little more navigable. I’ll do this both through practical how-to tips and gentle reframing of the paradigms around creative work and other roles. (And sometimes not so gentle. Some of those paradigms need to be exploded.) This newsletter will be most useful for writers of fiction—which is what I am—but will likely have some utility to writers of all the other things, as well as creatives in other media.

This publication has never and will never use generative AI.

About me

Ten years ago I (re)started on the path to becoming a writer. My first publications were short stories in literary magazines. Then I dug into learning to write novels. I've done workshops, residencies, mentorships, worked with editors, read craft books (so many craft books!) and everything else I could access and afford. In 2021, after querying three books over four years and 167 rejections, I signed with my agent. In March 2023, my debut novel, Johanna Porter Is Not Sorry, released on an imprint of HarperCollins, and in January 2024 my second book, Principles of (E)motion was released on the same imprint.

Warmly,

Sara
